Monitors Make All the Difference - Computer Buying Guides

Almost anyone who has even a rudimentary knowledge and understanding of computers knows what RS232 is, or has at least heard of it. That's because serial data communication, once the primary means of interconnectivity between computers, is still being used today, albeit mostly for hooking up peripherals and instruments. Ask, however, for a description and explanation of RS422, and you'll mostly get blank stares. That's peculiar as RS-422 is a logical progression of RS-232 and one that made a whole lot of sense.

Buying a desktop computer at one time was a simple task - visit a showroom, select a model and pay for it; the computer is delivered and installed and that's all there is to it. Today, you would be lucky if you even knew where to begin your search for the ideal desktop computer. Use the information in this article to guide you in your purchase.

You have decided you need a desktop computer, but before we begin looking into CPU performance and the right type of Hard Disk Drive you will need, you have to ask yourself the all important question "what do you need the desktop for?" because that is what determines the best buy for you.

Desktops are generally bought by people who want a computer at home to check emails and chat with friends, type up household budgets and track income and expenditure, or type up the occasional word file. You can easily get a low end system that will cost you around $500 to perform these tasks. If on the other hand you have specific needs, you can choose a high end model. Alternatively, you can upgrade storage and add a truly mind boggling array of features to the desktop. It is recommended that you buy what you need with the option to upgrade in the future when required.

In addition to speeds up to 10 megabits per second (albeit only over a fairly short distance of 40 feet) and a maximum connection distance of 4,000 feet, RS-422 can communicate in both directions simultaneously. And while the standard only allows for a single driver, there can be multiple receivers (up to 10). RS-422 systems need a dedicated pair of wires for transmitting and receiving, and also one for control signals, if required. Depending on speed, distance and the characteristics of nodes, termination (the matching of impedance between nodes and the line) may or may not be an issue in RS-422 systems.

Monitors with up to 24 inches screen size and response times of 16 milliseconds or less are best for general use. For the gamers and professionals a response time of 12 milliseconds or less is good. It is recommended that you buy a wide screen monitor over a standard monitor as this will allow you to view multiple windows, work on several applications and use multimedia like HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc players.
